Books in the digital age

In its February 2001 Resolution on "New frontiers in book production: electronic publishing and printing on demand", the European Parliament put forward various proposals aimed at supporting literary creation and electronic publishing in Europe.
The publishing industry is backed by Community activities in its efforts to adapt to the new digital age.

The European Commission's eEurope initiative is designed to help the Union exploit all the new opportunities afforded by the Internet and information technologies. In this context, the eContent programme supports the production of European digital content, while the User-friendly information society research programme is experimenting, in the electronic publishing sector, with technologies allowing, for example, the management of copyright and the sale of literary works on-line. The Information Society Technologies Programme (IST) supported a project launched in 2001 called TEL project (The European Library) the principal aim of which was to develop a digital library accessible in several languages.

The European legislative framework is adjusting to technological developments.

The May 2001 Directive on the harmonisation of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society gives authors greater control over their rights, while providing for exceptions for educational and cultural establishments.
