How and when to apply

All sites should apply by contacting their relevant national authority, as each EU country is responsible for pre-selecting sites to submit to the European Commission.

When?

2013 - EU countries which did not participate in the intergovernmental European Heritage Label initiative and wish to participate in the European Heritage Label (Austria, Estonia, Denmark, the Netherlands) may exceptionally pre select up to four sites which can potentially all be selected.

2014 – all other EU countries, wishing to participate in the European Heritage Label and which participated in the intergovernmental initiative may exceptionally pre-select up to four sites which can potentially all be selected – these may already have been awarded a label within the intergovernmental initiative.

2015 the full scheme will be in operation, with labels awarded every two years.

Candidate sites are assessed on the basis of their projects and work plans.

How?

Applicants must use  the application form msw8 - 147 KB [147 KB] български (bg) čeština (cs) dansk (da) Deutsch (de) eesti keel (et) ελληνικά (el) español (es) français (fr) italiano (it) latviešu valoda (lv) lietuvių kalba (lt) magyar (hu) Malti (mt) Nederlands (nl) polski (pl) português (pt) română (ro) slovenčina (sk) slovenščina (sl)   prepared by the European Commission to apply to the European Heritage Label. This application form is the result of the revision of the previous version on the basis, inter alia, of suggestions from the panel following the first selection. The translations in all languages will be ready by end of January 2014.

The panel would appreciate to receive this revised version filled in for the 2014 selection onwards. However, sites can still fill in the version of the application form previously on line for the 2014 selection. Applicants should fill in the form and send it to the national authority pdf - 117 KB [117 KB] responsible for pre-selection at national level. All Member States participating in the action in a given selection year will forward the application forms relating to the pre-selected sites to the European Commission for selection at EU level (no proposal should be sent directly from applicants to the European Commission) before the first of March of the given year.

Pre-selection at national level and final selection at European level will be based on the criteria laid down for the Label and the application forms filled in for the candidate sites. Monitoring of the labelled sites will also be based on the project and work plan described in the application forms.

- Guidelines for Member States pdf - 147 KB [147 KB]

The panel recommends that the application forms filled in for the candidate sites should not be longer than 30 pages (Times New Roman 12), including pictures and maps.

The Commission expects to receive the application forms from the Member States concerned in the language(s) of the pre-selection at national level, provided that it (they) is (are) among the 23 official EU languages. In addition, with a view to a more efficient selection process, and considering that the discussions between the panel members will most probably take place in English, it is essential for the Commission to receive English versions of the application forms as well.
