The European Union Prize for Literature 2010

The 2010 edition of the European Union Prize for Literature will be presented on 18 November 2010 at the Royal Flemish Theatre in Brussels. Celebrating emerging talents, the prize will be awarded to eleven authors from different European countries.

The winners were announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair on 6 October 2010.

The aim of the prize

This prize aims at putting the spotlight on the creative and diverse wealth of Europe’s contemporary literature, promoting greater circulation of literature within Europe and interest in non-national literary works.

Countries taking part in the 2010 Award

In 2010 an author from Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Finland, Luxembourg, FYR of Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia and Spain received an award.

Winners for the 2011 edition will be chosen from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Malta, Serbia, The Netherlands, Turkey and United Kingdom.

Selection criteria

The winning authors were selected on three criteria established by the European Commission:


The consortium created by the European Booksellers Federation (EBF), the European Writers' Council (EWC) and the Federation of European Publishers (FEP) is in charge of organising the selection and the award ceremony of the European Union Prize for Literature. The consortium was selected in 2008 on the basis of an open call for proposals as part of the "Special action" of the Culture Programme.

Estonia: Tiit Aleksejev, Palveränd (The Pilgrimage)

Finland: Riku Korhonen , Lääkäriromaani (Doctor Novel)

Germany: Iris Hanika, Das Eigentliche (The Bottom Line)

Luxembourg: Jean Back, Amateur

Romania: Răzvan Rădulescu, Teodosie cel Mic (Theodosius the Small)

Slovenia: Nataša Kramberger, Nebesa v robidah: roman v zgodbah (Heaven in a blackberry bush: novel in stories)

Spain: Raquel Martínez-Gómez, Sombras de unicornio (Shadows of the unicorn)

Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia: Goce Smilevski, Сестрата на Зигмунд Фројд (Sigmund Freud's sister)
