Current European Capitals of Culture
The European Capitals of Culture for 2013 are Marseilles (France) and Košice (Slovakia).
These cities were officially chosen in May 2009 by the Council of the EU on the basis of the programmes they submitted and the selection panel's report on candidate cities for 2013.

Each of the 2013 Capitals of Culture was awarded the Melina Mercouri prize in September 2012. Once chosen, the cities are responsible for implementing the programme of events proposed.
