Tallinn and Turku, European Capitals of Culture 2011

The opening ceremony of Tallinn 2011 was held on New Year's Eve, with a major public concert gathering thousand of people taking place on the Theatre Square.
European Capitals of Culture Turku opened its festivities on 15 January with a show held by the Aura River and featuring breathtaking aerial performances and fire sculptures, with the participation of a huge choir. It was one of the biggest cultural events ever to be seen in Finland and was designed specifically for this occasion. The slogan of the proposal of Turku, European Capital of Culture, is "Turku on Fire", referring to the numerous fires which destroyed the city along its history but also to the wonderful energy that the organisers have put in the event. Indeed, the programme of the year includes about 150 cultural projects with several ones with a strong European dimension. For example the Eurocultured Festival, taking place in Spring 2011, not less than 300 artists coming from more than 10 European countries will perform in the streets of the city.
