European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008  DIVERSIDAD !– European Urban Experience thrives online

Hip-hop project DIVERSIDAD! has caused an underground sensation on the Internet.

European hip-hop project DIVERSIDAD!, established as part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008, has caused an underground sensation on the Internet. Hip-hop artists from all over Europe worked together to produce a single track to promote European urban culture, mutual respect and creativity. And DIVERSIDAD! goes on: with a festival in Vienna on 23, 24 and 25 of June during the EURO 2008 football championship.

The DIVERSIDAD! project was initiated by the European Music Office (EMO) and the association Diversités. Patrons are ABD AL MALIK, a European ambassador for intercultural dialogue, AKHENATON (IAM) and AHMED (La Caution). The goal of the project is to create a platform where artists can share ideas, be creative and work together on music and art.  Along with events and activities like concerts, exhibitions, documentaries and conferences, a digital exchange platform was developed and put online in April to promote the creativity of European urban culture. Thanks to this digital platform, artists from all over Europe are able to get together and collaborate on common tracks. These ‘collaborations of creativity’ foster mutual understanding, respect and diversity in a musical context.  The digital platform also acts as a showcase of the richness of European urban culture, providing a common space for the artists’ productions, videos, graffiti, concert dates, etc. Current news on the making of the single, conferences and festivals are updated regularly. One of the main activities of the project was to have European artists get to know other cultures and exchange experiences by working together on a common song. All artists associated to the project thus came together on the 30th & 31st of March in Paris for the recording of a single that’s turned into a truly unifying anthem. It was a very unique experience produced by Spike Miller.  The following artists took part in recording the song, “DIVERSIDAD!”: DJ Cruzfader featuring Akhenaton & Shurik’N (IAM) / Nikkfurie (La Caution) / Abd al Malik (France), Baloji (Belgium), Noora Noor (Norway), Curse (Germany), Mucho Muchacho (7 Notas 7 Colores) (Spain), Sam the Kid (Portugal) and Promoe (Looptroop Rockers) (Sweden). The instrumental version of the track "DIVERSIDAD!" has been available for free download since the 30th of April on the Myspace platform, so that artists from any country can adapt it and circulate their own version. A cappella versions are also available for remixes, and the video of "DIVERSIDAD!" can be found on www.myspace.com/diversidadexperience.  Thousands of people have already downloaded the video and listened to the song, making the Internet platform DIVERSIDAD! a vibrant example of how intercultural dialogue works through music and art.  But DIVERSIDAD! does not just exist online. It is also being turned into a festival in Vienna on the occasion of the EURO 2008 football championship hosted by Austria.  On 23, 24 and 25 of June, the WUK - Werkstätten und Kulturhaus in Vienna, one of Europe’s greatest cultural and artistic centres, will welcome some of the most important names of European hip hop culture for a three day festival featuring GRAFFITI, LIVE PERFORMANCES, CONFERENCES and the 1st EURO DJ CONTEST.  The festivities will be hosted by two famous Austrian MC’s, SenZ27 and Funke69.
