The opening ceremony of Guimarães 2012 will take place on 21 January, with the participation of European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Portugal's President Anibal Cavaco Silva.
Guimarães (Portugal) bears the European Capital of Culture title this year, together with Maribor (Slovenia).
The festivities will start with a major theatrical and multimedia open-air show across the city. The programme of the year focuses on the history of the city as well as on underlining more contemporary and innovative cultural themes.
The event is expected to act as a catalyst for the social, economic and urban transformation of Guimarães, which can help further raise its international profile.
In Maribor, the opening ceremony will take place from 13 to 15 January, with a programme consisting of renowned music, theatre and dance performances.
Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the European Commission responsible for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, will participate in the ceremony and will raise the European flag after wishing the city every success for the event.
The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Mr Danilo Türk, will inaugurate the event; he will be accompanied by the Mayor of Maribor, Mr Franc Kangler.
The programme of Maribor 2012 combines traditional and more innovative projects in the field of culture. Activities are expected to stimulate citizens' participation in the cultural life of Maribor and are especially targeted at a young audience.
