Four of the five feature films nominated as Best Foreign Language film for the upcoming Oscar Awards have been supported by the Creative Europe MEDIA sub-programme of the European Union. Likewise MEDIA has supported the UK film Philomena, nominated for best Picture, best Actress and best Adapted Screenplay. We also find MEDIA-supported films in the categories of best Animated Feature Film and best Documentary Feature.

The films nominated for an Oscar represents a variety of European countries, artistic creativity and talents, as presented in the category of Foreign Language film: the Belgian film The Broken Circle Breakdown received three different types of MEDIA distribution support. The Italian La Grande Bellezza was awarded both development and distribution support which as was this years' Danish nominee for the Oscar, The Hunt.

The UK film Philomena, supported by MEDIA Distribution, has been nominated for three Oscars: for Best Picture with Judi Dench as best Actress and for best Adapted Screenplay by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope. 

Additionally the Cambodian candidate for the Foreign Language Oscar has been awarded both development and distribution support through the French co-producer of the film.

The French-Belgian co-production Ernest and Celestine is one of the strong candidates in the category for best Animated Feature Film, as is the Danish-Norwegian-UK co-production The Act of Killing for an Oscar for best Documentary Feature.

Creative Europe is also involved in the UK film, the Invisible Woman, nominated for best Costume Design.

European talent

The nominees for the 2014 Oscar Awards additionally represent a variety of European talent and artistic work, like the film 12 Years of a Slave which is nominated in not less than seven categories: Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Costume Design, Directing, Film Editing and for best Adapted Screenplay.

In the category of cinematography we find four of five European contributions: Phillipe le Sourd (the Grandmaster), Bruno Delbonnel (Inside Llewyn Davies), Phedon Papamichael (Nebraska), Roger A. Deakins (Prisoners),

The MEDIA sub-programme of Creative Europe aims at strengthening the European film industry within Europe and beyond.  The 86th Annual Academy Awards, known as the Oscar ceremony, will take place on the 2nd of March 2014.
