The film is backed by the European Union's MEDIA programme which has provided nearly €1 million in support for its distribution in cinemas across Europe. Amour is a French-Austrian-German co-production which focuses on the enduring love of an elderly couple as they confront the realities of ageing and death.

'Michael Haneke is a supremely talented European writer-director and his latest success with Amour is richly deserved,' said Commissioner Vassiliou.

The film has already won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the four top prizes at the European Film Awards and is also nominated in five categories (best film, best foreign film, director, best actress and original screenplay) at next month's Oscars.

'There can be no better proof of the added value of MEDIA, which will continue to fund European films under our new Creative Europe programme,' added the Commissioner.
