DIGITISATION OF CINEMAS
This new action under the MEDIA PROGRAMME 2007 is dedicated to European independent cinema operators who screen a majority of European films (of which at least 30% are European non-national) and who will acquire and install a DCI-compliant digital projector
With a budget of €2M for 2011, the MEDIA Programme is planning to support the digitisation of 100 screens across Europe.
The support, which will take the form of a lump sum of €20.000 per screen, will be awarded to co-finance the costs related to the digital transition of European theatres, to the exclusion of the cost of the digital projector and server.
NETWORK OF CINEMAS
"MEDIA's support for exhibition is principally channelled through its funding for networks.
The most well known network is the Europa Cinemas. Since its creation in 1992, it sets up an initiative in the film exhibition sector and created the first international film theatre network for the circulation of European films.
The network in Europe encompasses over 820 cinemas in 475 European cities.
Europa Cinemas objectives are:
-Encouraging the screening and promotion of European films with particular
emphasis on non-national European films;
-Supporting and developing of a European network of cinema operators and its
common activities;
-Contributing to the development of educational and raising awareness activities
targeted at young cinema-goers;
-Encouraging and accompanying the introduction of digital cinema among
exhibitors."
