Berlinale Co-production Market

The Berlinale Co-production Market exists since 2004 and its development has been supported by MEDIA since its second edition in 2005. MEDIA supports the event with a contribution evolving from 50,000€ in 2005 to 105,000€ for the 2012 edition. Since 2009, the event benefits from a 3-year framework partnership agreement, which has been renewed in 2012 and covers its activity until 2014. Those 3-year partnership agreements give stability to the best projects. They are very appreciated by the sectors. The Berlinale Co-production Market selects and presents on average over 40 projects, out of an average of 350 projects applied for. Out of the projects selected, around 65% are coming from various European countries (2011 figures: 28 European projects for a total of 43 projects selected, representing 11 European countries). A total of over 470 professionals are participating to the event, of which on average 75% are European.

According to 2011 figures, a total of 118 projects, which have been presented at the event since its inception in 2004, have been co-produced and many have been screened at international film festivals and/or theatrically released.

Creative Europe: Commission unveils plan to boost cultural and creative sectors

Brussels, 23 November 2011 – Thousands of people working in cinema, TV, culture, music, performing arts, heritage and related areas would benefit from increased EU support under the new 'Creative Europe' programme unveiled by the European Commission today. With a proposed budget of €1.8 billion for the period 2014-2020, it would be a much-needed boost for the cultural and creative industries, which are a major source of jobs and growth in Europe. The new programme would allocate more than €900 million in support of the cinema and audiovisual sector (area covered by current MEDIA programme) and almost € 500 million for culture. The Commission is also proposing to allocate more than €210 million for a new financial guarantee facility, which would enable small operators to access up to €1 billion in bank loans, as well as around €60 million in support of policy cooperation and fostering innovative approaches to audience building and new business models.

Media literacy relates to all media, including television and film, radio and recorded music, print media, the Internet and all other new digital communication technologies. The Commission considers media literacy an extremely important factor for active citizenship in today's information society, a real key pre-requisite just as literacy was at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is also fundamental for European cinema: media-literate people will be able to exercise more informed choices also as regards to the audiovisual content market.

Media literacy is the ability to:

  • Access the media
  • Understand the media and have critical approach towards media contents
  • Create communications in a variety of contexts.
