Automatic support - FAQs
Are you eligible?
You are eligible if you are a European distributor who has already distributed at least one European work from another country.
What works are eligible?
All recent works of fiction, cartoons and documentaries more than 60 minutes long. The copyright of the film cannot be dated earlier than four years before the year of submission of the application.
How does the support work?
- Phase 1 - Generation stage
Once a year, MEDIA issues a call for proposals. Distributors then declare the box-office receipts from films from other European countries that they distributed the year before. Only films from 2008 or later generate support, so there is no point declaring older films. - Phase 2 - Reinvestment stage
The receipts determine the amount of support which will be available, in each case, for three forms of reinvestment in new films from other European countries:- co-production
- minimum distribution guarantees
- distribution costs.
How much support is available?
- Phase 1 - Generation stage
The amount of potential support is based on the receipts from the films, their origin and the country of distribution. A detailed table showing the coefficients used can be found in the guidelines. - Phase 2 - Reinvestment stage
Reinvestment in co-production or distribution (minimum distribution guarantees, publishing, promotion and publicity costs) can cover from 40 to 60% of eligible costs. The maximum amount which may be reinvested in each case is set out in the guidelines.
