European Rendezvous in Cannes during the Film Festival
and
MEDIA to welcome again professionals in its tent in the International Village

During the European Rendezvous in Cannes, Sunday 20 May and Monday 21 May, the Commissioner Vassiliou, will participate in important discussions with the professionals, she will award the 2012 Prix MEDIA and will host a conference on the future programme CREATIVE EUROPE.

The MEDIA programme will for the 21th year in a row have a stand at the Cannes International Film Festival, whose 65th edition will be held from May 16 to 27.

The famous umbrella MEDIA stand will again this year be the "meeting point" for European producers, distributors, sales agents, festival and training organisers or simple curious visitors. The stand will furthermore host the Europa Cinemas network and Eurimages from the Council of Europe.

MEDIA and 'Creative Europe' in the spotlight at 65th Cannes Film Festival [16/05/2012]
18 films supported by the European Commission's MEDIA programme are in the Cannes Film Festival's 'Official Selection' this year, of which seven are in competition for the Palme d’Or, notably "Amour" by Michael Haneke, "The Angel's Share" by Ken Loach and "Jagten" (The Hunt) by Thomas Vinterberg.

Digital distribution of European films

With the growth of digital technology, existing film distribution practices are under review. Cinemas are undergoing a massive process of digitisation. Broadcasting services have evolved as a result of several technological developments: the switchover to digital, IPTV and the advent of over the top audiovisual services and internet connected TV enable consumers to access more and more non linear services. In addition, developments in consumer equipment have enabled people to access and create content anywhere anytime using mobile devices (tablets, laptops, smartphones). In this complex and increasingly competitive landscape, content formats will be expected to evolve as well as the models of distribution. In this context, an appropriate policy of support and promotion of European works becomes crucial.

Media literacy relates to all media, including television and film, radio and recorded music, print media, the Internet and all other new digital communication technologies. The Commission considers media literacy an extremely important factor for active citizenship in today's information society, a real key pre-requisite just as literacy was at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is also fundamental for European cinema: media-literate people will be able to exercise more informed choices also as regards to the audiovisual content market.

Media literacy is the ability to:

  • Access the media
  • Understand the media and have critical approach towards media contents
  • Create communications in a variety of contexts.
