Andrea Nacciarriti, first prize winner at TernaPrize03, is an artist in residence in Beijing from Feb 8th to Mar 31st 2012. The new project that will be shown is inspired by the recent agreement for the construction in China of the largest coal plant in Asia. China relies on coal for about 70% of its needs. It is one of the biggest producers of greenhouse gases in the world. Here, the atmosphere is so saturated with soot particles and heavy metals that it frequently produces one of the most disturbing 'natural' phenomena.
The mist shields the sun and makes it look like the moon: a white circle appears in white. The title is a tribute to Alighiero Boetti, a leading figure of Arte Povera, who created "Me sunbathing in Turin January 19th 1969". Boetti used the same industrial materials that accompanied the economic boom of the '60s in Turin, while China is as well using its own resources and is acclaimed for its "progress".
The exhibition will show a video work entitled "White Sun" and an installation with coal and a butterfly. As symbol of beauty and fragility, butterfly appeared also in Boetti's work. As he stated: '"We give the intelligence and beauty. I think that nature is a blind force, obtuse, running only for this fundamental principle of the existence, life."
