This new project will be an exhibition of exquisite pieces in a breathtaking sequel to our previous "Terracotta Army of Xi'an" exhibition. We have named our new project:"CHINA'S GOLDEN AGE: Treasures from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE)"
As always, this new exhibition project will be handled in cooperation with the renowned Drents Museum in Assen (NL). Once again, the many years of good contacts between the Maaseik Museums and the Drents Museum enable us to present this prestigious project to our visitors.
Tang Dynasty is famous for its fabulous riches. It is no coincidence that this important period in China's history is referred to as the "Golden Age". One of the important elements laying the foundation for this prosperity was the Silk Road, a network of trade routes that got its name from the trade in Chinese silk that began during the Han Dynasty. The Silk Road brought the Orient into contact with Western culture, and allowed good and lucrative trade relations to be developed.
The huge prosperity generated is reflected in the magnificent material culture that developed during the Tang Dynasty. Several themes can be distinguished in this material culture, which will be focused upon in the exhibition:
- social components: men and women
- cultural components: merchants, trade and production, sports and exercise, Buddhism, mysticism, art and literature
- a unique Chinese culture.
