Xu Jiang's sunflowers were portraits of one generation, which was also dubbed the "sunflower generation". Born after the wars and surviving the Cultural Revolution, whose termination spelt the end of a rare chapter in history, this generation made a belated return to academia at their youth's tail. They bore witness to intellectual revivals, opening-up and reforms, shock of a changed outside world, as they founded themselves inextricably caught in the historical regeneration of a nation. They are jaded from the transformation of worlds, yet burdened with the task of deliverance and self-redemption. The artist is full of expectations that his sunflower will invite the post-war generation of artists from both China and Germany to conduct a dialogue on social thought and their shared art and experiences, to explore the spiritual core of this generation, the shared history and memories, ruptures and entanglements..
