"Madama Butterfly" is an opera in 3 acts written by Giacomo Puccini. The current production was presented at the LNOBT on 23 March, 2006 and instantly gained remarkable success, earning praise from both audience and critics. It also marks Oscar-winning film director Anthony Minghella's debut in the opera arena. Inspired by the austerity of Japanese staging and how precision is used to achieve great beauty, the creative team managed to create transparency through unadorned yet beautiful series of images, producing an overwhelming amount of emotions for the viewers of this opera production. This "Madama Butterfly" was recognized as the Best Opera Production in the Laurence Olivier Awards 2006. The production of G. Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" is a unique example of the harmonious co-existence between two cultures, Eastern and European, which is first and foremost reflected in the creative team of the production, featuring accomplished artists from China (associate director and choreographer Carolyn Choa and costume designer Han Feng) working together with famous European creators (director Anthony Minghella, music director David Parry, lighting designer Peter Mumford, etc.).
