The Decision No 792/2004/CE of the Council and the European parliament of the 21/04/2005, establishes a Community Action to support the preservation and the commemoration of the main sites and archives associated with the deportations, symbolised by the memorials which have been raised on the sites of the former camps and other places of mass-civilian martyrdom and extermination, and to keep alive the memory of victims at these sites.
The Decision No 792/2004/CE establishes the Community Action for three years (2004-2006). The Action is carried out through the publication of an annual call for proposals. The historical period to be taken into account is the beginning of the 1930s until 1945, 8 th of May.
The projects must help:
- to preserve and commemorate the memory of victims of deportations and incarceration in the camps;
- to explain why, how and what happened in the former camps and other places of mass-civilian martyrdom and extermination;
- to facilitate the dissemination of the European Populations History and improve the knowledge of the present and future generations on that period.
53 projects have already been selected via the publication of two calls for proposals. The budget awarded amounts to 1.600.000 Euro.
