Other actions

Apart from the Culture 2000 programme for which it is responsible, the Culture Unit is active in the cultural field in various ways.

Each year, it implements the procedure for designation of the « European Capital of Culture ». It also manages the functioning grants given by the budgetary authorities of the European Union to some Cultural Organisations of European interest, and carries out experimental actions in the field of cultural cooperation.

The European Commission has opened a call for expression of interest for participation on the EC's stand during the Midem (Cannes 27 - 31 January 2008)

The Culture Unit also takes part in the debate which is under way at the European level on some key cultural issues such as sponsoring, mobility of artists and cultural cooperation. It is also regularly consulted by other departments of the Commission on proposals of legislative acts or supporting instruments which have a cultural dimension.

Last but not least, in March 2002 the Culture Unit launched a webportal dedicated to Europe and Culture, responding to the wish of the European Council to see the Commission and the Member States "promote the networking of cultural information to enable all citizens to access European cultural content by the most advanced technological means" (Council Resolution of 21 January 2002).
