General call for Culture 2000 for the Year 2006
The 2006 call for proposals was closed on 17th October 2005 for annual projects and translation projects (action 1) and on 28th October 2005 for multiannual projects (action 2). The Commission received 566 applications for action 1 and 133 for action 2. The first stage of the selection procedure has begun and eligibility checks are being carried out. The newsletter will keep you informed about the progress of this procedure.
Participation of Turkey in Culture 2000 in the year 2006
The ratification process regarding the Memorandum of Understanding recently signed between the European authorities and Turkey is currently underway and is expected to take place before the end of the year, so that cooperation projects presented by Turkish cultural operators within the framework of the call for proposals no 39/05 may be eligible for funding.

2008 : European Year of Intercultural Dialogue
On October 5th, the Commission adopted a proposal for a Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council to declare 2008 “European Year of Intercultural Dialogue”. This European Year will draw on the wealth and diversity of a series of specific projects to be implemented during 2008 through programmes and other Community actions. Culture, education, youth, sport and citizenship will be the central themes of the year.
UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions
On 20th October 2005 the Unesco General Conference adopted the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
This Convention was negotiated jointly by the European Commission, on behalf of the Community, and the Council Presidency, on behalf of the Member States. It is the first of its kind in international relations, as it upholds a consensus that the international community has never before reached on a variety of guiding principles and concepts related to cultural diversity. This text forms the basis of a new pillar of world governance in cultural matters.
Support to cultural bodies
The call for proposals was opened until 28th October 2005 . 220 applications have been registered. The selection procedure has begun with the eligibility check, exclusion and selection criteria. The newsletter will keep you informed about the progress of this procedure.
Study on the cultural economy
Following the call for tenders published in the Official Journal of 18th June 2005 (no S 117), the Commission has decided to award the conducting of a study on the cultural economy in Europe to Kea European Affairs. Please read the June issue of the newsletter to know more about this study, the results of which should be available during the 4 th term of 2006.
