procedure within the general call 2003 (continuation and conclusion)
procedure for the selection of projects which will receive a grant for
2003 is coming to an end. The grant agreements are being signed by the
European Commission and the promoters of the selected projects. The
list of these projects will be available for consultation shortly on
the DG EAC website.
Extension of Culture 2000
its meeting on 6 May, the Council took note of the Commission's
proposal for a decision to extend the Culture 2000 programme to include the
period 2005-2006, with an additional budget of EUR 69.5 million.

creating a future cultural programme to replace the Culture 2000

Culture 2000 in South
close co-operation with the Council of Europe, Culture 2000 supports a
joint project in South East Europe, whose goal is to carry out a
survey of the cultural heritage of this region and to draw up a
priority list of monuments and sites in need of urgent conservation or

Council decided to confer the title of European Capital of Culture for
2006 on the Greek city of Patras, on the basis of a communication from
the Commission. This decision follows on from the Decision
of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 May 1999
establishing a Community action for the European Capital of Culture
event for the years 2005 to 2019.
Council also unanimously approved a declaration on the tragic
destruction of cultural property, archaeological sites, monuments and
libraries in Iraq, formally expressing the European Union's concern
regarding the situation and its support for the work
currently being done by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in response to these events.

aspects of culture, highlights the fact that further efforts are
needed to place culture at the heart of European integration, and the
second, on access for people with disabilities to cultural facilities
