United Kingdom

Category: Hobby/sports equipment

Product: Kart – 49CC Super Mini Z4

Brand: GO KART

Name:

Type/number of model: Model on outer carton SX-G1100

Batch number/Barcode:

OECD Portal Category:

Description: The Go Kart comes in various colours: red, blue, black, yellow or green. It is packaged in a plain cardboard box within a metal frame around the Go Kart itself. The Go Kart is a metal tubular frame construction in one of the colours listed above. It requires some self-assembly by the user, including the seat, steering wheel, fuel tank and fuel lines. The seat is black and constructed from wood. The fuel exhaust is positioned to the rear of the seat. The fuel tank is plastic.

Country of origin: China

Injuries,
Burns,
Fire

The product poses a risk of injuries because :

- the steering system is completely exposed, and parts of this can be considered finger trap hazards,

- the driver’s seat is constructed from wood and this can be considered as material likely to splinter or crack dangerously under impact,

- the brake cable can easily become detached from the handle. This prevents the brake from being engaged, thus posing a serious hazard.

The product poses a risk of burns because:

- the exhaust system is only partially guarded, and the guard is not in a position which would protect the driver. Exhausts of this type become extremely hot during use;

and a risk of fire because:

- the fuel tank and its associated pipework are located directly over the exhaust system, leading to a serious risk of fire hazards both in operation and especially during refuelling.

- the fuel tank cannot be fitted correctly to its supports. Only one of the available fittings can be properly attached. Securing the tank by one support alone means that the tank can tilt, bringing it even closer to the exhaust. The tank can be fitted in two different orientations, one of which brings the fuel line closer to the exhaust, increasing the risk of fire.

The product does not comply with the Machinery Directive.

Voluntary measures: Voluntary stop of sales and recall from consumers by the importer.

Compulsory measures: Withdrawal from the market ordered by the authorities.

Country of origin: China

Electric shock

The product poses a risk of electric shock because :

- the switch housing has not been sealed to the pump housing. This would be prone to splashing and allow the harmful ingress of moisture,

- the unit has not been marked with maximum and minimum fill levels. Overfilling could allow water to enter the switch housing, creating a shock hazard, while underfilling could cause the pump to overheat. The pump and the washer do not comply with the requirements for marking.

In addition, the instruction manual is considered to be inadequate.

The product does not comply with the Low Voltage Directive and the relevant European standard EN 60335.

Compulsory measures: Withdrawal from the market ordered by the authorities.

Enforcement is a top priority of the EU Consumer Policy Strategy 2007-2013. Both measures leading to RAPEX notifications and measures which come to the attention of the Commission and other Member States as reactionsare indications of enforcement activity in the Member State concerned.

In order to give a better view on the overall level of enforcement, including the follow-up activities of the national market surveillance authorities, the Commission RAPEX team has decided to publish on the RAPEX website also the names of the countries that have found the notified product on their market and have taken appropriate measures (and have submitted a reaction to a RAPEX notification as a consequence).

Information about the reacting countries is available in the RAPEX weekly overviews in the column 'Products were found and measures were taken also in'. The Commission RAPEX team will publish reactions sent (from May2009 onwards) to 2009 RAPEX notifications.
