Electric shock

This product poses a risk of electric shock because the curved plastic element may melt and lose its shape, as a result of which it may no longer be guaranteed to be watertight. The flaw lies within the plastic tube, which is made up of two types of plastic soldered ultrasonically. The plastic tube is sealed by a plastic disc to which the wooden cap is attached with three screws. The change in the type of plastic used for this disc could be the source of the flaw that resulted in loss of shape and caused the lamp to lose its watertightness during endurance tests.

Product: Passenger car “BMW 5-series E34 Touring”

Brand: BMW

Name:

Type/number of model: 5/HE700/1

Batch number/Barcode:

OECD Portal Category:

Description: Production of affected vehicles took place between May 1995 and June 1996. Only vehicles with steering lock by the manufacturer Valeo and without interlock-system may be affected.

Country of origin: Germany

No pictures are available

Injuries

The product poses a risk of injury because in high-use vehicles, the oscillation fracture can progress so far as to lead to steering lock cam fracture. This normally happens when the vehicle is started, so it cannot be driven.

In exceptional cases, the vehicle can be started and the vibration caused by the subsequent movement can cause the steering lock disk to shift into the lock position, immobilising the steering. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that a failure occurs while driving, leading to critical situations and accidents.

Voluntary measures: Voluntary corrective action by the producer.

The entire key ring, together with the chain, could then pass through the cylinder for small parts. This product does not comply with the Toys Directive and the relevant European standard EN 71-1.
