We are what we eat!

‘We eat what’s on the table’ was probably what your parents were told. Today, however, we are overloaded with choices, and the question is how to choose what’s best for us when food is abundant.

An estimated 20% of young people in Ireland are thought to be overweight. Being overweight can cause chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. They say we are what we eat, and while good nutrition isn’t necessarily a cure, it goes a long way toward preventing these problems… What we eat has an important impact on our lives: in Europe, six of the seven biggest risk factors leading to premature death relate to how we eat, drink and exercise.

The best recipe

A balanced diet combined with regular exercise is the best recipe for a healthy life. We all know that, but with so many competing demands for our time, the problem is often that cooking a proper meal or taking some exercise is not top of the list. It’s about making choices.

A healthy lifestyle will make you feel better – you’ll have more energy and find yourself in a better mood. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Don't skip meal times
  • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid sweets and fizzy drinks
  • Go easy on fatty foods
  • Exercise regularly
