Germany

Category: Motor vehicles
Product: Passenger car – Ford Mondeo

Brand: Ford
Type/number of model: Vehicle type Mondeo Diesel 2.0 Duratorq -TDCI with DPF, EU type approval: e1*98/14*0154-*0156*16/*17. Only vehicles with diesel engine and exhaust system with built-in coated diesel particle filter (DPF), built between 10 February and 8 September 2006 are concerned.

Country of origin: Germany

No picture available

Fire

In the vehicles concerned, an area containing insulation material is placed above the diesel particle filter. The diesel particle filter system automatically performs regeneration cycles in order to remove soot deposits from the filter. In this case the diesel particle filter can become so hot that the insulation material can ignite. This is theoretically possible even when the vehicle is parked. Three cases have been reported where insulation material and chassis parts were damaged during diagnosis by Ford dealers.

No picture available

Fire

The product poses a serious risk of fire due to a manufacturing fault on the wiring harness from the starter to the alternator, the cable of the positive line may detach from the cable lug. If this cable detaches from the cable lug, the power supply to the vehicle will fail. In the worst case, a short circuit with flying sparks in the engine compartment may result upon contact with a component of the engine or the body.

Choking

The toy poses a serious risk of choking because where there is detachment of the battery compartment, critical parts are released (the battery lid, 3-pin plastic insert, screw, nut, battery compartment and three button cells batteries). The parts are considered to present a choking hazard:

- the battery compartment lid could cause direct obstruction of the airway, should it reach the rear of the oral cavity;

- the 3-pin plastic insert could become lodged in the oropharynx because of its shape, however it would be unlikely to prevent the flow of air;

- the screw and the button cell batteries are serious aspiration hazards. In particular if the button cells become lodged in the trachea they can cause complete obstruction of the airway or they can cause serious damage by electrical and chemical burns.

Detachment of the battery compartment is due to failure of attachment of the plastic insert by inadequate gluing.

This toy does not comply with the Toys Directive and the relevant European standard.

(*) NEW

Enforcement is a top priority of the EU Consumer Policy Strategy 2007-2013. Both measures leading to RAPEX notifications and measures which come to the attention of the Commission and other Member States as reactions are indications of enforcement activity in the Member State concerned.

In order to give a better view on the overall level of enforcement, including the follow-up activities of the national market surveillance authorities, the Commission RAPEX team has decided to publish on the RAPEX website also the names of the countries that have found the notified product on their market and have taken appropriate measures (and have submitted a reaction to a RAPEX notification as a consequence).

Information about the reacting countries is available in the RAPEX weekly overviews in the column 'Products were found and measures were taken also in'. The Commission RAPEX team will publish reactions sent (from May 2009 onwards) to 2009 RAPEX notifications.
