Consumer safety

European legislation ensures a consistent, high level of protection for the health and safety of consumers  by means of strict common safety rules and standards for products and services circulating within the internal market.

Products placed on the market are subject to general safety requirements covered mainly by General Product Safety Directive (GPSD) 2001/95/EC. On the other hand, certain products whose composition, manufacture or use may pose a risk to consumers are subject to more specific provisions.

A market surveillance system and the Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products (RAPEX)   allow dangerous products to be quickly withdrawn from the market, preventing further risks to consumers.

The European Commission is actively cooperating with relevant partners and stakeholders, also on international level.
