The British authorities submitted today a new notification via the European rapid alert system for dangerous non-food consumer products (RAPEX) concerning a voluntary recall by Mattel of a number of dangerous toys. The recall concerns various pet and furniture playsets sold under the Barbie brand and Fisher-Price toys. In total, there are 522,000 affected toys in the U.S., and 322,000 affected in the rest of the world including the EU.

One notification concerns various Barbie Accessory Toys (see details hereafter). Affected Barbie accessory toys were manufactured between 30 September 2006 and 20 August 2007 and contain excessive levels of lead which can cause adverse health effects.

The other notification concerns Fisher-Price Geo Trax Locomotive Toys. Affected Geo Trax toys were manufactured between 11 August 2006 and 4 September 2006 and contain excessive levels of lead which can cause adverse health effects.

The recall involves the Geo Trax Freightway Transport (package marked: H5705) and Geo Trax Special Track Pack (package marked: K3013). The recall only includes the red locomotive with yellow painted ladder and horn features. Recalled locomotives are marked with the following code on the bottom of the toy: 212-6CK through 365-6CK and 001-7CK through 232-7CK.

The European Commission asked all Member States to ensure immediate follow-up to these notifications, i.e. to check whether the notified products have been placed on their markets, to monitor the corrective actions taken by Mattel and to inform the Commission about the results.
