  • In July 2006, the European Commission received information from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) about a dangerous sport / hobby product named 'Wego Kite Tube'.

The Wego Kite tube is a 10-foot-wide circular, yellow inflatable watercraft designed to be towed behind a power boat. A rider in the tube becomes airborne by pulling on handles attached to the floor of the tube.

In the U.S. two fatal accidents have been reported; in addition CPSC is aware of 39 injury incidents (29 of these required medical treatment) involving the use of this product. Injuries include a broken neck, punctured lung, chest and back injuries.

While the causes of these incidents are still unknown, the Wego Kite Tube is being voluntarily withdrawn from the U.S. market by the company Sportstuff who equally recalled the product from consumers.

The Commission has asked the relevant authorities in the 25 EU Member States to launch the market surveillance activities regarding the 'Wego Kite Tube'. Several Member States have already informed the Commission that they have taken measures as the product has been found on their market.
