  • Commission approves acquisition of Spanish metal food cans producer Mivisa by rival Crown, subject to conditions
    14 March 2014
    The Commission has cleared the proposed acquisition of Mivisa Envases, S.A.U. of Spain by Crown Holdings, Inc. of the United States. Both Crown and Mivisa manufacture metal food cans used for fruit and vegetables, fish and seafood, pet food as well as ready-made meals. The clearance is conditional upon (i) the divestment of Crown's plants producing metal cans in Spain and (ii) the divestment of Mivisa's metal food cans plant in the Netherlands. The Commission was concerned that following the acquisition, the level of competition in markets for metal food cans in the Benelux, France, Spain and Portugal would have been too weak to avoid price increases. The commitments offered by Crown address these concerns.

  • Commission clears amended restructuring plan of Banco CEISS after integration with Unicaja
    12 March 2014
    The Commission has concluded that an amendment to Banco CEISS' restructuring plan, following its recent acquisition by Unicaja Banco, was in line with EU state aid rules. In particular, the Commission found that the integration into Unicaja Banco, a Spanish retail bank that received no state aid during the financial crisis, will ensure that Banco CEISS becomes a viable retail banking business in the long term.

  • Commission endorses investment aid for Hankook for production of tyres in Rácalmás, Hungary
    11 March 2014
    The Commission has authorised €57.9 million of regional investment aid to the Hungarian company Hankook Tire Hungary Manufacturing and Trading Ltd ("Hankook Hungary") for the construction of a tyre plant in Rácalmás, Fejér county, Hungary. The Commission found that the measure favours regional development while limiting the distortions of competition brought about by the state aid.

  • Commission opens in-depth investigation into subsidies granted to public transport in Ile-de-France
    11 March 2014
    Following a complaint, the European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation to examine the compatibility with EU state aid rules of subsidies awarded since 1994 to undertakings that provide public transport services in Ile-de-France. According to France, the subsidies awarded between 1994 and 2008 to 235 beneficiaries totalled €263 The Commission will check in particular whether the beneficiaries had additional costs linked to a public service obligation and if so, whether there was over-compensation for the provision of these services.

  • Commission approves aid for construction of cruise terminal in Liverpool
    11 March 2014
    The Commission has found that public funding worth £17.8 million (ca. €22 million) granted for the construction of the Liverpool cruise terminal is in line with EU state aid rules. The new infrastructure furthers EU transport policy objectives without unduly distorting competition in the Single Market.

    The Commission has approved Slovenia's map for granting regional state aid between 2014 and 2020 within the framework of the Commission's new regional aid guidelines, adopted in June 2013. The new guidelines set out the conditions under which Member States can grant state aid to businesses for regional development purposes. They aim to foster growth and greater cohesion in the Single Market.

  • Commission approves restructuring aid for Danish bank FIH
    11 March 2014
    The Commission found that state aid granted to the Danish bank FIH to deal with impaired assets is in line with EU state aid rules. In particular, the aid will be appropriately remunerated and FIH's restructuring plan will enable the bank to become viable in the long term without unduly distorting competition in the Single Market.
