United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

UNCTAD is responsible for:

  • implementing and following up a set of UN “equitable principles and rules for controlling restrictive business practices” (the "UNCTAD set"), adopted in 1980;
  • maintaining and periodically reviewing a model competition law, as a guideline for countries seeking to introduce such a law for the first time;

It is also active in the following competition-related fields:

  • technical assistance and capacity building, particularly in developing countries;
  • competition advocacy;
  • studies on competition and development

The European Commission is an active contributor to UNCTAD including participation in these events:

  • UN Review Conference assessing the UNCTAD set (every five years)
  • Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Competition Law and Policy - meets at UNCTAD to discuss matters relating to the UNCTAD set (every year)
