Global warming requires global solution, says Barroso

Speaking at the UN climate change conference in New York, commission president Barroso underlined that this issue was not just about European warming, but about global warming. "A global problem," he said "requires a global solution." The purpose of the meeting was to create momentum for the conference in Bali in December where leaders will start negotiating a post-Kyoto agreement for the global community to fight climate change.

Following the devastating forest fires that ravaged Greece this summer, president Barroso expressed his admiration for the show of solidarity in which many EU countries sent planes, helicopters and other fire-fighting equipment to the country. It didn't stop there. The EU also took measures to help, providing extra resources and firefighters to reinforce the action.

President Barroso talks about his meeting with Portuguese president, Cavaco Silva, in Brussels (Berlaymont). While the main topic of the meeting was the negotiations for the new EU reform treaty, the leaders also underlined the strong link between Portugal and Europe. President Barroso expressed his optimism for the futureand the new reform treaty.
