European Capital of Culture: Commissioner Vassiliou opens Košice 2013 with Slovak President and Prime Minister

European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Androulla Vassiliou will join the President of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Gašparovič, Prime Minister Robert Fico, Culture Minister Marek Maďarič and Mayor Richard Raši in Košice on 20 January to mark the official launch of the city's year as 2013 European Capital of Culture.

The winners of the 2013 European Border Breakers Awards ("the EBBAs"), highlighting the best new music acts in Europe which have achieved cross-border chart success, were honoured this evening at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival at Groningen in The Netherlands.

Marseille (France) and Košice (Slovakia) are the European Capitals of Culture in 2013. The cultural programme will officially begin on 12 January in Marseille and on 19 January in Košice.
