Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou attends opening of Paralympic Games in London

Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, will attend the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in London on 29 August (starts 21:30 Brussels time). "I am certain that the Paralympic Games will be nothing short of inspirational for all of us – whether athletes, spectators or viewers at home. I am looking forward to attending the opening and wish all the athletes an enjoyable games and good luck," said the Commissioner.

Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for sport, will attend a number of events at the Olympic Games in London from 10-12 August, including the closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday evening (starts 22:00 Brussels time).

Aarhus wird für Dänemark „Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2017“

Die unabhängige Jury, die die Bewerbungen um den Titel „Kulturhauptstädte Europas“ prüft, hat für das Jahr 2017 die Stadt Aarhus vorgeschlagen. Damit hat Aarhus die innerdänische Konkurrenz Sønderborg aus dem Feld geschlagen. Das zweite Gastgeberland, das in fünf Jahren ebenfalls eine „Kulturhauptstadt Europas“ stellen darf, ist Zypern. Die offizielle Ernennung der beiden Siegerstädte durch den EU-Ministerrat ist für Mai 2013 geplant.

Die EU-Kommissarin für Bildung, Kultur, Mehrsprachigkeit und Jugend Androulla Vassiliou steht beim ersten Internationalen Kulturgipfel in Edinburgh am 13. und 14. August auf der Rednerliste. Kulturminister aus aller Welt, Künstler, Denker und andere Akteure aus dem Kulturbereich nehmen an dieser Veranstaltung im schottischen Parlament teil, die im Rahmen des weltbekannten Edinburgh Festivals stattfindet.
