Female Commissioners call for Member States to nominate more women in new College English (en)

Female EU Commissioners have signed a letter supporting a call by President-Designate Jean-Claude Juncker for Member States to nominate at least 10 women for the next Commission. The letter, addressed to Mr Juncker, states that the European Union is committed to making continual progress towards gender equality and that such progress demands an increase, not a decrease, in the number of female Commissioners.

First European Heritage Label winners get awards English (en)

The four sites selected to be the first recipients of the new European Heritage Label will be presented with the award on Tuesday 8 April by Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth. Doris Pack, chair of the European Parliament's Culture and Education Committee, will also participate in the ceremony at the Solvay Library in Brussels.

À partir du 1er septembre, les écoles secondaires peuvent s’inscrire au concours Juvenes Translatores, le concours pour jeunes traducteurs de l’Union, à l’adresse suivante: ec.europa.eu/translatores. Les inscriptions sont ouvertes jusqu’au 20 octobre et le formulaire de candidature en ligne est disponible dans toutes les langues officielles de l’Union européenne.

On 9 September the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) will release its annual statistical publication, Education at a Glance. The European Commission will host the launch event in Brussels. The report features data on education from the 34 OECD countries, including 21 EU Member States.

Vassiliou urges Education Ministers to help kids crack the code English (en)

European Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has written a letter to EU Education Ministers urging them to ensure that children have the opportunity to develop basic computer coding skills in school. The letter, jointly signed with Neelie Kroes, Vice-President for the Digital Agenda, states that coding skills are part of the solution to youth unemployment and a growing skills gap in the ICT sector, which is expected to see a shortage of 900 000 ICT practitioners by the end of 2020.

Another record-breaking year for Erasmus English (en)

The latest Erasmus statistics released by the European Commission today reveal that nearly 270 000 students - a new record - benefitted from EU grants to study or train abroad in 2012-2013. While studying at another university continues to be the most popular choice, one in five students (55 000) opted for Erasmus job placements in companies. The three most popular destinations for Erasmus students in 2012-2013 were Spain, Germany and France. Countries sending the highest number of students as a proportion of their graduate population were Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Finland, Latvia and Spain.

President Barroso to open Europe's largest science event in Copenhagen English (en)

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso will on Sunday launch EuroScience Open Forum 2014 (ESOF 2014), Europe's leading biennial science conference, being held this year in Copenhagen. In his speech, President Barroso will call on Europe to remain a world leader in science and use it as a source of jobs and growth. To achieve that, he will call for better and more investment in research and innovation, and a better link with the marketplace.

Coupe du monde: allez l'Europe!

Androulla Vassiliou, commissaire européenne responsable du sport, a souhaité bonne chance aux équipes européennes participant à la Coupe du monde 2014 de la FIFA dans un message qu'elle leur a adressé. La 20e Coupe du monde de football commence à Sao Paulo ce jeudi 12 juin, par une rencontre du groupe A entre le Brésil, pays hôte, et la Croatie. L'Espagne, championne du monde, défendra son titre notamment lors de la rencontre qui l'opposera aux Pays-Bas le vendredi 13 juin à Salvador. La finale aura lieu le 13 juillet 2014 au stade Maracanã de Rio De Janeiro.

After many efforts, it seems that the football family of Cyprus has finally come to an important agreement in signing a provisional arrangement for the organisation of football in Cyprus. I commend the efforts of both sides, and congratulate them in reaching this historic agreement and I also thank the Presidents of FIFA and UEFA, Mr. Blatter and Mr. Platini, for their personal involvement and role in this matter.

EU-backed films honoured at Cannes English (en)

Three films supported by the EU's Creative Europe MEDIA programme received awards at the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival. The jury, chaired by Jane Campion, awarded the Grand Prix in the main competition to Italian director Alice Rohrwachter for The Wonders (Les Merveilles). Jean-Luc Godard's Adieu Au Langage (Goodbye to Language) received the Jury Prize and Timothy Spall received the award for Best Actor for his performance in Mike Leigh's Mr Turner. In the 'Un Certain Regard' section, the Jury Prize went to the Swedish film Turist by Ruben Ostlund.

Bosnian film director Tanović to receive EU 'Prix MEDIA' at Cannes English (en)

The Oscar-winning Bosnian director Danis Tanović is the winner of the 2014 European Union 'Prix MEDIA', awarded to the best new film project eligible for support from the Creative Europe MEDIA programme . Tanović will receive the award from Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for culture, during a ceremony at the Cannes Film Festival in France on Saturday 17 May (11am, Café des Palmes, Palais des Festivals).

CREATIVE EUROPE IN THE OSCAR RACE English (en)

Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has welcomed the fact that four of the five movies nominated as Best Foreign Language Film for the Oscars are supported by the EU's Creative Europe MEDIA programme. The UK film Philomenia, nominated as Best Picture and for Best Actress, as well as films in the categories of Best Animated Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature, have also received support from the MEDIA sub-programme.
