Commission hosts launch of Education at a Glance 2014

On 9 September the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) will release its annual statistical publication, Education at a Glance. The European Commission will host the launch event in Brussels. The report features data on education from the 34 OECD countries, including 21 EU Member States.

The 2014 edition confirms the importance of education and skills for jobs and growth in the EU. It builds on recent OECD reports such as the Survey of Adult Skills, PISA, the Programme for Student Assessment measuring the skills of 15 year olds, and TALIS, the Teaching and Learning International Survey on teachers and school leaders.

The findings highlight significant differences in skill levels between EU countries as well as skills mismatches.

Education at a Glance enables countries to measure themselves against the performance of their counterparts. It is also a useful source evidence for European policy making, allowing decision-makers to assess European developments in a global context.

The report draws on data compiled by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

EU Member States which are not in the OECD (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Lithuania, Malta and Romania) are not covered by the report. Latvia, although not an OECD member, is included as it is an OECD partner country.

The 2014 edition of the Education at a Glance will be presented by Andreas Schleicher, Director of the OECD's Education and Skills Directorate. Xavier Prats Monné, European Commission Director-General for Education and Culture, will discuss the importance of the findings for education and training policies in Europe.

The launch will take place in the Jean Rey meeting room of the Commission's Berlaymont building at 11am.

The presentations by Andreas Schleicher and Xavier Prats Monné will be web-streamed here. Education at a Glance 2014 will also be available online: http://www.oecd.org/edu/eag.htm
