Commissioner Vassiliou announces upcoming strategy on cultural heritage
In a visit to Athens on 6-7 March, Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou will announce a planned new Commission strategy for promoting the intrinsic and societal value of cultural heritage, while seeking to maximise its contribution to smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.
The strategy will focus on how the EU can support Member States and increase cooperation at European level to strengthen the protection of cultural heritage. The new strategy is due to be adopted in May.The Commissioner Vassiliou will open the Greek Presidency conference "Heritage first! Towards a common approach for a sustainable Europe” on 6 March. The event, gathering representatives of Member States and heritage experts, is organised by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports with co-funding from Creative Europe, the EU’s new programme for the cultural and creative sectors. The conference will highlight the contribution of cultural heritage to sustainable socio-economic development and prepare the ground for a dicussion by EU Culture Ministers on the impact of cultural heritage on regional development when they meet in May.
