Androulla Vassiliou welcomes the agreement reached on provisional arrangement for the organisation of football in Cyprus
After many efforts, it seems that the football family of Cyprus has finally come to an important agreement in signing a provisional arrangement for the organisation of football in Cyprus. I commend the efforts of both sides, and congratulate them in reaching this historic agreement and I also thank the Presidents of FIFA and UEFA, Mr. Blatter and Mr. Platini, for their personal involvement and role in this matter.
This agreement is a great example of the power of football to unite and constitute a force for building bridges. It is clear that this provisional arrangement relates only to football, and should not be seen as a precedent in relation to the political solution of the Cyprus Problem. The agreement is based on trust and on the good-will of the participating parties, and I am a firm believer that these principles are indispensable elements of any political solution of the Cyprus Problem: much like in the case of football, any solution will have to be rooted in similar intentions of good-will and trust.
Following this critical first step, I now hope that the two sides will be able to ratify and fully implement the established agreement and work towards developing even closer cooperation for the good of the sporting community of Cyprus.
