Vassiliou welcomes message of support for MEDIA Programme
Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou has welcomed the publication of a letter expressing strong support for the future MEDIA programme by leading representatives of European cinema. Signatories include directors such as Ken Loach, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Costa Gavras, Aki Kaurismäki and Cristian Mungiu, as well as actors including Charlotte Rampling and Yolande Moreau.
The letter, published by Europa Distribution, Europa International, Europa Cinemas and L’ARP (the French Guild of Authors, Directors and Producers), supports the multi-annual budget increase for the cultural and creative sectors proposed by Commissioner Vassiliou as part of 'Creative Europe'. Under the proposal, the MEDIA strand would receive more than €900 million in 2014-2020 compared to €755 million now.
"If the MEDIA Programme was to suffer budget cuts in the future or to lose its specificity, the diversity of choice (a diversity of offers) on the market would be strongly reduced, correspondingly affecting the global growth of the market, competitiveness of European companies and employment. The lack of support to distribution could additionally reduce the circulation of European works by more than half and probably result in the disappearance of European independent companies," the letter warns.
Commissioner Vassiliou said: "I very much welcome this message from high-level representatives of European cinema. The MEDIA programme is a pillar for diversity, choice, competitiveness and employment in the cinema industry – and long may that continue."
The Creative Europe programme is under discussion in the European Parliament and the Council.
