Commissioner backs chess in schools

Former world champion Garry Kasparov presented his 'chess in schools' initiative to Commissioner Vassiliou at a meeting on 21 March. The idea is to develop a comprehensive chess curriculum which can be introduced in schools across Europe to help young people develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving.

Council for Education, Youth, Culture and Sport - informal meeting, Gödöllö, Hungary (28-29 March).

The EU Council for Education, Youth, Culture and Sport held informal ministerial meetings on culture and education in the Royal Palace of Gödöllö on 28-29 March. Commissioner Vassiliou represented the European Commission. The meeting on culture (28 March) was chaired by Géza Szöcs, Hungarian Minister of State for Culture. The meeting on education (29 March) was chaired by Rózsa Hoffmann, Hungarian Minister of State for Education.

European University-Business Forum: focus on Europe 2020 reforms and employability.

High-level representatives from business, higher education and politics are meeting in Brussels on 22-23 March for the fourth annual European University-Business Forum. Participants will discuss how universities and businesses can contribute to the Europe 2020 reform agenda by improving the employability of graduates and increasing Europe's innovation capacity. Among the keynote speakers are Commissioner Vassiliou, Christian Jourquin, CEO of Solvay Group and Chair of the Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology Foundation, and Professor Mario Monti, President of Bocconi University in Milan and a former Member of the European Commission.

Η επίτροπος Ανδρούλλα Βασιλείου καλεί τους νέους να συμμετάσχουν στην πρωτοβουλία "Νεολαία σε κίνηση"

Η λήψη μέτρων για την αντιμετώπιση της ανεργίας των νέων βρέθηκε στο επίκεντρο της διάσκεψης της ΕΕ για τη νεολαία, η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Βουδαπέστη και στο Γκόντολο στις 2-4 Μαρτίου με τη συμμετοχή 100 και πλέον εκπροσώπων των νέων και υπευθύνων για τη χάραξη πολιτικής. Η κα Βασιλείου δήλωσε χαρακτηριστικά: "Πέντε εκατομμύρια νέοι άνθρωποι δεν έχουν σήμερα δουλειά, και η διάσκεψη είναι μια καλή ευκαιρία για να ακουστούν οι απόψεις των εκπροσώπων των νέων σχετικά με το πώς θα πρέπει η Ευρώπη να αντιμετωπίσει το πρόβλημα αυτό."
