Commissioner Vassiliou addresses teachers on the occasion of World Teachers' Day
Teachers' Day will be celebrated worldwide on October 5th. It is a day that is meant to pay special tribute to the daily work of millions of teachers around the globe.
Teaching is a profession that we can all relate to, as children and adults. Apart from midwifery, it is perhaps the only profession in life that we all have an experience of before entering the job market. Being a teacher means something for the whole of our lives, the way we live, the way we behave, the way we learn, the way we communicate, the way we collaborate. A good teacher is for a lifetime.
I am addressing this message to you to demonstrate that the whole European Union counts on you and your work. We count on the knowledge you impart, the attributes and attitudes that you cultivate, the skills that you teach. If the European Union is to come out from the crisis stronger, if we are to achieve prosperity, sustainable growth, fight poverty and social exclusion, high quality education is essential; and we cannot have high quality in education without teachers of the highest calibre.
Thank you teachers for everything you offer to our children.
