Space applications: a market for the taking

Space applications: a market for the taking

Regarding space policy the Commission initiated a series of dialogues on space cooperation with Russia, the USA, and South Africa, and reached out to China with a thematic event on space research in the EU pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo. In addition, the European initiative for the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) will provide data to help deal with a range of issues including climate change and border surveillance. Moreover, in December, contracts were signed with two consortia, implementing GMES services that improve iceberg forecasting and air quality monitoring, and which will be available to citizens by the end of 2012.

There was also progress in the development of Galileo, including the signature of four major contracts and the testing of the first four operational satellites, means the satellite navigation system will deliver initial services in 2014. There has also been considerable progress with the EGNOS programme which increases the accuracy of signals from satellite navigation systems.
