Today's actions make tomorrow's future brighter, V-P Šefčovič tells SciencesPo
The decisive actions taken at the EU level to tackle not only the symptoms of the economic crisis but also its underlying causes have left Europe in a much stronger position to cope with further crises in the future, Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič said on Monday.
Speaking to students at the prestigious SciencesPo university in France, V-P Šefčovič said that the future of the Europe would depend on learning from the mistakes of the past and making sure that they never happen again.
Thanks in particular to the willingness of EU countries to work together on economic governance and financial regulation issues, areas where traditionally they had acted independently of one another, Europe is now in a far stronger position, V-P Šefčovič said.
"When push comes to shove, Europe is capable of taking tough decisions, for the benefit not just of one country's citizens but for all 500m people living in the EU," he said. "Europe’s economic recovery may, after all, come as a result of the fact that the crisis acted as a catalyst for change, growth and reform. In other words, in our present we have the seeds of a far better future."
