V-P Šefčovič debates 'new vision' for Europe
Europe's future lies in greater coordination and deeper integration of policies and programmes, Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič said on Wednesday.
Speaking at a conference on economic and monetary union in Bratislava, V-P Šefčovič said that EMU provided a "new vision" for the future of Europe, based on working together to find common solutions to shared problems.
He stressed that the seeds of this new vision had already been sown over the last few years as the EU has worked hard to tackle the cause and the effects of the economic crisis. Economic governance measures such as the fiscal compact and budgetary control measures like the six-pack and two-pack already showed that national governments were ready to pool their sovereignty in this area for the sake of the greater good.
But he underlined that more would have to be done – on banking union, on fiscal union, on political union – to ensure that the new vision comes to pass.
