European Parliament debate on the results of the Spring European Council
Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič today took part in the European Parliament debate on the outcome of the Spring European Council, alongside President José Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman van Rompuy.
MEPs quizzed the two Presidents on a large number subjects – the need to focus on growth and competitiveness to move out of the crisis, the signing of the new Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Growth, the decision to grant EU candidate status to Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria in Schengen.
In his closing remarks, V-P Šefčovič focused on upcoming Commission proposals for improving employment across the EU. New measures expected next month will look at how to focus on core areas for growth, such as healthcare and ICT, and how to remove the barriers that still exist to the free movement of labour.
He also pointed out that the Commission is already working with Member States on how best to redeploy the €84bn from social and cohesion funds that is still unspent. Efforts will also be focused on garnering support for initiatives such as the financial transaction tax and project bonds.
