Spring European Council and Serbia top general affairs council agenda
Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič took part in today's general affairs council to discuss preparations for the European Council meeting later this week.
Top of the agenda was the debate on the draft Council conclusions, which broadly endorse the Commission's recent proposals on economic governance, in particular the main priority areas set out in the Annual Growth Survey published earlier this month, which V-P Šefčovič called "our shared vision to get Europe back on track for growth and jobs".
He in particular welcomed the support in the conclusions for the Commission's Alert Mechanism Report, a new tool designed to flag up (and ultimately address) potential macroeconomic imbalances. Other measures backed by Council include the need to accelerate growth and tackle youth unemployment.
The GAC will also discuss Serbia's bid to become the latest candidate country to join the EU, a proposal that is also expected to be endorsed at the Spring Council on 1-2 March.
