Warming up for the European Citizens' Initiative
With just a little over two months to go until the launch of the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) on 1 April, a conference hosted by Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič on Thursday 26 January offered delegates a chance to see how plans are progressing for registering initiatives and collecting signatures.
The conference, (video) Warming up for the Citizens' Initiative, featured interventions from the Commission officials responsible for preparing the ground for the ECI, from the various social media networks that are expected to play a key role in both promoting initiatives and mobilising support, and from the political representatives whose task it will be to oversee the initiative at European and local levels.
It featured examples of existing national citizens' initiatives that highlighted the important part played by citizen-led actions in many Member States.
Interest in the ECI is high, as the recent Facebook chat on the subject clearly showed. The chat can be found on the European Commission's Facebook page.
V-P Šefčovič used the conference to launch the new registration site for all ECIs and presented the open source software developed by the Commission which can be used to create initiatives and collect signatures.
