Hearing organised by Assembleia da República to discuss the Commission's Work Programme for 2012.
Vice-president Šefčovič is attending a Hearing organised by the Portuguese Parliament (Assembleia da República) to discuss the Commission's Work Programme for 2012. This political debate will inform the Assembleia's choice of priority initiatives for scrutiny in terms of the subsidiarity principle.
The Treaty of Lisbon introduces the possibility for national parliaments to scrutinise Commission's proposals to check whether they respect the principle of subsidiarity, i.e. whether the proposed actions can indeed be better achieved at the level of the European Union rather than at the national level.
The Hearing is organised by the Committee on European affairs, and will be chaired by the Speaker of the Assembleia Assunção Esteves. It will also include the participation of the Secretary of State for European affairs, Morais Leitão, as well as Portuguese MEPs and Members of the Regional Assemblies of Açores and Madeira.
