Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič opens Conference of Speakers of National Parliaments
On Friday, 14th May, Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič opened the Conference of Speakers of National Parliaments in Stockholm. This brings together speakers from forty chambers of national parliaments across the EU, the President of the EP and also assemblies from candidate countries. In his intervention, Vice-President Šefčovič underlined the great progress already accomplished in bringing EU institutions closer to national democratic realities, so that European affairs become part of daily discussions in national parliaments.
He stressed that this is a normal state of affairs, as so much legislation impacting on citizens' lives finds its origins in European regulation. The Treaty gives national parliaments the instruments to have a voice in the legislative process of the EU, and Vice-President Šefčovič strongly encouraged Speakers to seize this opportunity and bring Europe closer to the citizens.
