The new European Commission
The new European Commission chaired by President Jose Manuel Barroso took up its duties on Wednesday, 10 February 2010. As a first working meeting in his new position, Commission Vice-President in charge of inter-institutional relations and administration Maroš Šefčovič visited the Committee of the Regions of the EU to meet a group of Members of this institution.
In his introductory remarks, the Vice-President underlined the importance of the Committee in the context of the Lisbon Treaty which has brought more powers to the Committee of Regions through the protection of its key principle – subsidiarity. At the same time he expressed his conviction that the Commission and the Committee of the Regions will continue their positive and effective cooperation and that representatives of both institutions will meet on a regular basis to achieve common goals.
A fruitful informal discussion in a friendly atmosphere concluded with common agreement that both sides will keep in touch and will inform each other about all issues and challenges which need to be discussed and if necessary transformed into European practice.
