Statement by Olli Rehn

Olli Rehn
Mikkeli, Finland, 21 August 2011

Discussions  surrounding the candidates  for the 2012 presidential elections in Finland  are ongoing. I have been asked to consider  whether I will run. I appreciate the messages of support that I have received to this effect from various strands of Finnish society.

I have  considered the matter  thoroughly  over the summer. It has been a difficult process. I am indeed tempted to mount a campaign if only to  assert my views on Finland's  international orientations and the fair and balanced development of the country, rallying support for them by meeting with people all over the country.

I do not however consider that my  running for the Presidency is  possible  owing to my current duties as EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs. My  goals  for Europe are still very much  in progress. I am fully committed to the ongoing work to overcome the sovereign debt crisis in Europe.  This cannot be combined  with   Presidential campaign in  an election as demanding as that of the Finnish presidency.

Stabilisation of the European economy is also  of vital interest  to Finland. The success of Finland as a prosperous country has always been closely intertwined with the success of Europe. Therefore, I regard my work as EU Economics Commissioner as being of very high importance  to Finland as well. I will continue to  focus on these duties and I will bring the mission to  its conclusion. As such, I will not run for president in the 2012 elections.
